Camo Yarn Bombing!

Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum will be running free drop-in knitting workshops on the lead up to Concealment and Deception: The Art of the Camoufleurs of Leamington Spa in World War 2 exhibition.

Leamington University of the 3rd Age Knitting Group – The Woolpack will be giving knitting workshops on Saturday 7 & 21 May,  4 & 11 June and 2 & 9 July, between 2 and 4pm.

Throughout the sessions, the public will be invited to create knitted graffiti artwork for two of the Royal Pump Rooms columns.
The columns will be ‘yarn bombed’ and camouflaged to celebrate Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum’s upcoming exhibition Concealment and Deception: The Art of the Camoufleurs of Leamington Spa in World War 2.
The project to ‘yarn bomb’ the colonnades will be going ahead this summer. The knitted sleeves will cover the two outer columns in the colonnade. One column will be yarn bombed with white, blue and grey shades to represent water – the North Atlantic and ship camouflage, as well as signifying the River Leam. The other column will be camouflaged in earthy tones to represent Northern European camouflage and the Pump Room Gardens.

Concealment and Deception will tell the story of the camouflage establishment based in Royal Leamington Spa, during World War 2. This exhibition will present the work of the camouflage staff – often known as ‘camoufleurs’ – against the backdrop of life on the ‘Home Front’.
This exhibition will be complemented by a series of related events and activities within the town organised by Leamington Camouflage 2016.

NB: The knitting workshops are free, drop-in sessions.

  1. I should love to contribute. I’m an experienced knitter but I shall be away on 11 June. How do I become involved in this amazing project?

    1. Hi Lisa – there are 2 more workshops – 2 & 9 July. If you can’t make either of those, suggest you get in touch with Leamington Art Gallery & Museum to see if you can work in your own time to contribute to the project! They may have a colour scheme in mind….
